Our day starts with your expert driver and guide welcoming you onboard one of our special Mountain Taxi super jeeps.
Our adventure takes us to the north of Reykjavík. We travel through the main town of west Iceland at Borgarnes and then head west onto the beautiful multi-colored terrain of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
The western tip is the newly designated national park including the glacier and stunning coastal beaches and cliffs. We will visit a view point in the foothills of the glacier, made famous in the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth penned by French novelist, Jules Verne.
Buðir meaning “shops” was the old trading point of the area in olden times. What remains today are almost invisible ruins of this formerly vibrant trading post.
We can optionally stop for coffee at the Buðir Hotel, one of the most popular country hotels in Iceland, popular as a remote meeting place and hideaway for Iceland’s celebrities. You never know whom you might meet there!
We go down to the tiny village at Arnarstapi with a chance to see the beautiful sea cliffs and views in this area. There is a beautiful walk of around two and half kilometres from Arnastapi to Hellnar, which guests, can enjoy.
We’ll stop at the charming settlement of Hellnar nestled below the glacier at the ocean’s edge and view spectacular cliffs teaming with birds for a good part of the year.
During summer we take lunch at the charming Fjöruhúsið café located in a warm and sheltered spot near the beach. (see review). Enjoy the stunning view while listening to the calls of the seabirds, which inhabit the surrounding cliffs.
We’ll head down to the beach at Djúpalónssandur where you can try lifting one of the large stones or collect a few of the naturally polished lava stones at the surf’s edge.
Then we’ll head north around the peninsula to the weather-exposed fishing village of Ólafsvík. We then head back to the main road to Reykjavík and arrive back at our starting point in the early evening following a rewarding experience on Iceland’s mystical Snæfellsnes peninsula.
